What is the ‘Sokuirei-Seiden-no-gi’?

About 2,000 people, including the prime minister, the heads of both Diet chambers, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, business leaders and foreign dignitaries are scheduled to attend the event.

At 1:00 p.m., the Emperor, dressed in formal court wear, will enter the room accompanied by chamberlains carrying the sacred Imperial treasures.

He will step on the nearly 6.5-meter-high Takamikura throne placed in the center of the room.

Following the Emperor, the Empress, dressed in a multilayered ceremonial kimono, will step on the around 5.5-meter-high Michodai seat placed next to the Takamikura.

As the guests stand up, the curtains of the Takamikura and Michodai will be opened. The Emperor will then proclaim his accession to the throne.

This will be followed by a congratulatory address by the prime minister and three rounds of banzai, meaning long life. The Emperor and Empress will then leave the room.

The ceremony is expected to last about 30 minutes.
